What is dyslexia?

Although the word means "reading disability," the disorder is more than that. It involves cognitive difficulties with learning the sounds of letters, speech perception, language memory, and recognizing and manipulating the basic sounds in a language. Dyslexia is a neurological condition that has an underlying genetic basis.

There are often spelling difficulties. Dyslexics have trouble with speed and accuracy in word decoding. One of the symptoms of dyslexia is high anxiety over reading and writing. Although few people enjoy reading aloud out of fear of mispronunciations, dyslexic people can be paralyzed with anxiety, because even if they know what they're trying to say, their minds can confuse letters and words. For example, the dyslexic may mix up the letters d, p, and b. Sentences can get rearranged even if the dyslexic didn't intend to do so.

The tragedy is that although dyslexics are intelligent and often above average, people mistake their difficulty for "stupidity." This has a devastating effect on the self-esteem of the dyslexia sufferer, who already may be feeling despondent over their disability.

Anxiety

Quite good studies show that CBD can help relieve anxiety and related conditions. Since there are high levels of anxiety in dyslexia, it's conceivable that CBD help alleviate dyslexia symptoms as well. Even though more studies on CBD and its effects on anxiety need to be done, it seems prudent for dyslexics to give CBD a try.

There's another condition that we need to mention: Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD).

ADHD

ADHD is a disorder in which a person has difficulty performing a task that requires focus, organization, or close attention. In adults, it can also manifest as forgetfulness, fatigue, or disorganization.

Dyslexia and ADHD often coexist, or perhaps one is a cause of the other. One study showed that adults with ADHD who self-medicate with CBD experience a reduction of some of the ADHD symptoms. The suggestion has been made that CBD can help dyslexia because it improves ADHD across the board. Unfortunately, the study mentioned above was far from conclusive and there's a lot more work to be done to show if CBD has a significant effect on dyslexia via ADHD (or vice versa). There simply isn't enough evidence and more studies are needed.
